Remember, this is a winter event, and although the entire bike course is paved, there may be snow, sand, and/or ice along the route. This website will be updated approximately 2 days before each event with the course condition to assist you in choosing your bike and shoes for the event. All race information will be posted to this website - no email updates will be sent.

Races will be contested regardless of conditions - and if the weather warrants we may change the distances, course, or format of the race accordingly, so no grumbling - this is all about having fun in the winter.

A nice dry bike route

RACE #3 UPDATE (updated 8pm Thursday Feb. 19th): Finally we are seeing Chilly Cheeks weather! I thought we would have 3 warm weather races, but there is a doozy of a storm blowing in for Saturday's race!

Based on the current forecast, we should have a few inches of snow on both the bike and the run courses. Heavy snow isn't in the forecast until afternoon. The race is definitely on (it's the Chilly Cheeks way!). Any decisions to modify the course will be made on Saturday morning, but I don't expect any changes.

So - based on previous years, I anticipate many of you are considering switching from the Open to the Fat Tire division. Please keep in mind - if you have raced in the Open Division at the first two races, you should stay in the open division for this race. The Open division means you ride whatever bike the conditions call for - in other words, a road bike for nice weather and a mountain bike for bad weather. Points are not transferrable between divisions, so if you switch from Open to Fat Tire, then any points you earn in Saturday's race will not count toward your series total.

The current series point standings are posted online:

The Duathlon will go off in 22 randomly assigned waves at 1 minute intervals. The first wave goes off at 10:00am. We do this to avoid packs from forming on the bike - this is a no-drafting event, after all.

Following the bike ride, duathletes will run a 4 mile loop. The loop is identical to the December route, except you will run it in the opposite direction.

The 4 Mile Run-Only wave will go off at 10:20am. We do this so you will not be forced to share the road with oncoming cyclists. By the time runners hit the road section of the course, all cyclists will have cleared that section of the course.

Series awards will be presented at the conclusion of the race. You must be present to pick up your award - they will not be mailed. We will push to get series standings calculated as quickly as possible.

A total of 45 series awards will be presented. At least one will be awarded to each Open, Fat Tire, and Run age group. Additional awards will be presented in categories based on the number of series participants in each category. We will post a list of categories and the number of awards in each category at packet pickup.

Limited parking will be available in the Hobie Hill parking lot, immediately adjacent to transition. Once the lot is full, we will cone off the lot and additional parking will be 100 yards down the road in the Marina Parking Lot. Remember, there is a per-vehicle gate fee for all vehicles entering the park, so car-pooling is recommended.

You may see open spaces in the Hobie Hill lot after it has been coned. Those spots are reserved for volunteers and medical crew. Please do not drive across the grass or attempt to park in this lot. Any cars that drive across the grass will be ticketed by the park.

Packet pickup will open at 8am. Please remember to bring your PHOTO ID in order to pick up your packet. Bib numbers are not transferrable.

HERE IS A REFRESHER COURSE ON THE RULES: 1. Helmets are required on the bike. 2. iPods and Headphones are not allowed. 3. The Fat Tire division REQUIRES that your tires are at least 1.90 in width. Cyclocross bikes do not count as a Fat Tire bike. Hybrids and mountain bikes with tires narrower than 1.90 do not count as a Fat Tire bike. This is an honor system thing, but we do ask that you check your tire width prior to the race.

That's it! We'll see you on Saturday!!!

4 Mile Run-only Option!

Again this season, we will be offering a 4 mile run option in addition to the duathlon. This no-frills 4-mile run follows the same fun course as the duathlon, covering a mix of road, paved bike path, and well maintained dirt trails.

The run-only events will be offered at all three races this winter! The December and January runs will begin promptly at 10:00am. The Run-Only wave of the February race will begin at 10:20am. Packet pick-up on both dates will close at 10:00am.

This is a no-frills event - we don't do awards or shirts, but we do have some yummy goodies afterwards, and we will be awarding sponsor merchandise to random finishers at the finish line. All races will be chip-timed.

Races will be contested regardless of conditions - and if the weather warrants we may change the distance or course, so no grumbling - this is all about having fun in the winter. Be prepared for dry roads and trails, but also be prepared for knee-deep snow!

The Duathlon Series

The Chilly Cheeks Duathlon Series is composed of 3 events - each with a different format. Each race is comprised of approximately 4 miles of running on paved roads, bike paths, and dirt trails. There will also be approximately 10 miles of paved cycling in each race.

Keep in mind, this is a winter event, and although the entire bike course is paved, there may be snow, sand, and/or ice along the route. This website will be updated approximately 2 days before each event (no emails will be sent) with the course conditions to assist you in choosing your bike and shoes for the event. The photos on this page will give you an idea of the variety of conditions you may experience in this series.

Races will be contested regardless of conditions - and if the weather warrants we may change the distances, course, or format of the race accordingly, so no grumbling - this is all about having fun in the winter.
