May 13, 2000 - Keenesburg CO - It was pro duathlete vs. pro triathlete as Andrew Holton and Cam Widoff hit the final transition in the second edition of the Barkin' Dog Duathlon. Both had posted near identical splits during the first 5K run and the 17 mile bike ride on the plains east of Denver. But little did they know that in wave-2, a pair of 37 year olds were nipping at their heels.
It wasn't until the turn-around, in fact, that Holton and Widoff realized that they had some company. Their 2 minute head start, by virtue of being in the first wave, was still at 2 minutes - barely - and Michael Hagen, a pro triathlete, and Andy Ames who placed second in the 35-39 category at the 1999 world duathlon championships were looking strong.
By this point, Widoff had broken free of Holton, but the two men in pursuit were a threat to both of the leaders once wave times were deducted.
For Hagen, this had to feel like deja vu. At last year's Barkin' Dog, Hagen also started in Wave-2, where he chased collegiate National Champion Nick Cady. Hagen came up short in 1999, and he was eager to reverse that scenario this year.
Widoff was also after a little retribution. Just a week earlier, a flat on the bike course kept him from defending his course record at the Wildflower Half-Ironman. That was not to be the case today, as he held onto his lead by a slim 7 second margin to finish in 1:14:35.
Hagen held off a fast closing Ames to take second, and Ames nipped Holton for third by six seconds. In the end, the top four men finished in a span of 21 seconds!
In the women's race, rookie pro Cindy Hizen put together a solid performance to take first in 1:27:50 over Boulder's Kerrie Wlad. Paula Nickel, of Fort Collins rounded out the women's top three.
The Barkin' Dog was the first event in the three race $1,000 Mile-High Duathlon Series. The two remaining events are the Big Sky Duathlon on June 17th and the Cabbage Head Duathlon on July 1st.
