Barkin' Dog Brings Karlsson
to His Knees... er, Knee

Keenesburg, CO May 15, 1999 - Multisport hearts were breaking as Colorado's most eligible race director/bachelor dropped to one knee and popped the question at the finish line of the inaugural Barkin' Dog Duathlon.

Paul Karlsson, race director for the Boulder Peak Triathlon, a 1999 Ironman Qualifier, carried the ring with him during the 5K run, 30K bike, 5K run event, and presented it at the finish line, to the cheers of several dozen spectators.

"I was going to wait until Ironman to do it," Karlsson said, "But I couldn't wait that long. Now when our kids ask us where we got engaged, I can tell then, Keenesburg - at the Barkin' Dog!"

Karlsson wasn't the only one celebrating in Keenesburg.

The University of Colorado Triathlon Team cleaned up on the race course. Fresh off of a fourth consecutive National Championship team title, a strong contingent of CU's finest made the 45 minute trip east to Keenesburg to take a shot at the USAT Regional Duathlon Championship.

Keenesburg is a small town on the plains north and east of Denver. And while most of the racers had never heard of it before, that didn't stop over 170 of them from checking it out. What they found was a community that was excited to have them in town and beautiful country roads that were closed to traffic.

The first of four waves left the starting line at 9:00 a.m. and when it was over, Nicholas Cady and Teri Duthi were crowned regional champions. Both were overwhelming winners at the National Championships just two weeks before, posting three minute margins of victory.

In Keenesburg, Cady had a little more to worry about. Starting two minutes back, in wave two was World 35-39 Duathlon Champion, and recent Colorado transplant, Michael Hagen.

Coming off the first run 11 seconds down on eventual third place finisher Lance Shimomura, Cady quickly established a decisive lead on the bike.

Hagen was doing much the same with the wave two crowd. In the end, however, Cady earned the victory in 1:18:58, with Hagen less than a minute behind in 1:19:50. Shimomura cruised in a minute later in 1:20:46.

Meanwhile, in the women's race, Duthi was dominating. She would go on to win in 1:32:41, a three minute margin over second place Cindy Hazen, of Littleton(1:35:40). Tracy Johnson, of Broomfield took third in 1:37:36.

Masters road cycling phenom Tom Knox took the mens masters Regional Crown with his 1:27:36 finish and Debbie Kallase took the women's masters title with her 1:45:10 finish.
