The Series

All three events take place on the Colorado Front Range, and welcome athletes of all ability levels. Some of the top professional athletes in the United States have competed in the series, and more than 2,000 first-time multisport athletes have made their debut in these events. All races feature courses and distances that are achievable for the beginning racer, yet the top elite athlete will also find the competition at the front of the pack is a challenge as well. The races offer a fun family atmosphere, good post-race food, and great raffles open to all participants. All participants will receive a custom race tech-shirt.

Chip Timing at All Series Events
AMB timing systems are the only chip timing systems to have been used at the Olympic Games, including the Olympic Marathon and Triathlon. They have been used at the UCI World Cycling Championships since 1993, and in recent years to time all stages of the Tour de France and the ITU Triathlon World Championships.
AMB is continually improving upon their transponder technology, and we are fortunate to use the AMB ChipX system - their most advanced timing system to date!
All race participants will receive a small transponder (chip) on race morning which will allow us to track your times throughout the race. Transponders are worn on the ankle using a lightweight, comfortable, and soft neoprene strap.
Only AMB ChipX transponders will work with this system. Champion Chip and Winning Time chips will not register, as the AMB system uses a different technology. All participants will receive their AMB chip on race morning, and transponders must be returned following the event.
Choose Your Distance
Participants in the Barkin' Dog Duathlon and West Side Duathlon will now have option to compete in the standard 5K/30K/5K format, or can choose to race a shorter course (approximate short course distances: 1.5 mile run, 10 mile bike, 5K run). The Big Sky Duathlon will be the same distance for all competitors (2.5 mile run, 15.5 mile bike, 2.5 mile run). Youth participants (age 12+) are encouraged to come out and compete in the short distance events!! Please be aware, series points can only be earned in the longer distance option at the Barkin' Dog and West Side Duathlons (youth participants can earn points in the shorter events).
Choose Your Division
Age Group: Solo Athletes will compete against other solo athletes in their specific age/gender group, unless they choose to enter one of the special categories listed below. Male and female age groups for the Mile-High Duathlon Series point standings are broken down as follows: Age 12-13, Age 14-15, 16-19, 20-24, 25-29, 30-34, 35-39, 40-44, 45-49, 50-54, 55-59, 60-64, 65-69, 70-74, 75-79, 80-84, 85-89. Awards are presented to the top-3 in each age group at each of the individual series events. Short course events are not eligible for series points, however awards will be presented to the top-3 short course finishers at each race in 10-year age groups.
Elite: Athletes desiring to compete for the prize money awarded to top finishers must register as Elite. A PRO LICENSE IS NOT REQUIRED to enter the elite wave, however competitors in the Elite wave will not be eligible for age group awards. Also, if a competitor races any one of the series races as an Elite, they will not be eligible for age group series points - even if they race the remaining two series events as an age-group competitor. An Elite competitor may, however, choose to race in his/her age-group at any time during the series and still receive an age group award at that specific event.
Clydesdale & Athena: Male Athletes Weighing 200 pounds or more may choose to compete in the Clydesdale division. Awards and series points are awarded to Clydesdales age 39 & under, and age 40 & over. Women weighing 150 pounds or more may choose to enter the Athena division. All Athena competitors will earn awards and series points in a single Athena division. Clydesdales and Athenas will not be eligible for awards or series points in their age groups. Awards are presented to the top-3 in each division at each of the individual series events.
FAT TIRE (mountain bike) DIVISION: Many newcomers to multisport as well as a dozen or so of our regular participants, choose to compete on their mountain bikes. In fact, we often see nearly 10 percent of our participants on their mountain bikes at each of the three races in the series. Athletes who race on a mountain bike or hybrid with a minimum tire width of 1.9 can choose to compete in the Fat Tire Division in place of their standard age group. Yes, you will still ride on the same paved route as the road bikers, but this division will even the playing field. Awards are presented to the top-3 in male and female finishers at each of the individual series events.
Tandem Division: This fun division was introduced in 2010 in response to many tandem couples who inquire about the series every year. In the tandem division, one or both team members will complete the run courses, and both will team-up for the ride. Awards are presented to the top-3 tandem teams at each of the individual series events.
Relay Teams: Relay teams, composed of 1 runner and one cyclist may participate in one of three categories - Male, Female, or Coed. Single Sport Athletes -- Let's See What You've Got. Pair up with your favorite runner or cyclist and compete! Awards are presented to the top-3 relay teams in each category at each of the individual series events.
Point Standings & Series Awards
Awards will be presented to the top-3 male, female, and relay team finishers in each category following each of the series races. In addition, we will track points earned throughout the series, with awards being presented immediately following the West Side Duathlon in September!
If two distance options are offered, series points will be awarded in the longer (Intermediate) events only - no points will be awarded in the short course races at the Barkin' Dog Duathlon or the West Side Duathlon, with the exception of youth participants (see below).
Youth particiants may choose to compete in the Intermediate Series (Barkin' Dog Intermediate Distance, Big Sky Duathlon, and West Side Intermediate Distance) or the Short Series (Barkin' Dog Short Distance, Big Sky Duathlon, and West Side Short Distance). All other divisions will receive points in the Intermediate Series events, only.
Youth Short Series: youth series points will be kept in the following age groups: 12-13, 14-15, and 16-19 in the short series. The short series includes the short race option at the Barkin' Dog Duathlon and the West Side Duathlon, and the single course option at the Big Sky Duathlon.
Youth Intermediate Series: Youth series points will be kept in a single age 19 & under division in the intermediate series, which includes the longer event at the Barkin' Dog and West Side Duathlons, and the single event at the Big Sky Duathlon.
Youth participants are eligible for awards in only one series option.
Elite Standings: (Intermediate series only) The top-10 male and female Elite finishers in each race will receive "Elite Points," with 10 points going to the first place finisher and 1 point going to the 10th place finisher. All three races will count towards the overall series champions, but you must complete at least two races to be eligible for series awards. Prize money totalling $2,000 will be awarded in the Elite category: 1st place Male & Female $400, 2nd-$300, 3rd-$200, 4th-$100. Additionally, the top-3 Elite finishers in each event will receive $150 for first, $100 for second, and $50 for 3rd.
Athletes going for the overall prize money will start together in the first, or "Elite" wave. Only athletes starting in this wave will be eligible for the prize money. A PRO LICENSE IS NOT REQUIRED to enter the elite wave - it is open to any individual who desires to compete for the prize money, however competitors in the Elite wave will not be eligible for age group awards. Also, if a competitor races any one of the series races as an Elite, they will not be eligible for age group series points - even if they race the remaining two series events as an age-group competitor. An Elite competitor may, however, choose to race in his/her age-group at any time during the series and still receive an age group award at that specific event.
Age-Group, Clydesdale, Athena, and Fat Tire Standings: (Intermediate series only) In each of the three races, the top-5 finishers in each age group or category will receive points toward the age-group standings. Points will be awarded 10 for first place, 8 for second, 6 for third, 4 for fourth, and 2 for fifth. All three races will count towards the age-group or division series champions, but you must complete at least two races to be eligible for series awards. The first place male and female series point winners in each 5-year age group, as well as Athena and both Clydesdale divisions will receive awards. Clydesdale and Athena points may not be transferred to an age group (and vice versa), even if the athlete switches categories throughout the series. Elite competitors will not receive points or awards in their respective age groups.
Beginning in 2006, the rules of triathlon & duathlon state that an athletes age for competition purposes is that athletes age on December 31st of the year of the event. Individual race awards and series points for the 2012 Mile-High Duathlon Series will be based on an athletes age on December 31, 2012.
Relay Team and Tandem Standings: (Intermediate series only) The top-5 Male, Female, and Coed Relay Teams and Tandems (there is a single Tandem division) at each series event will earn series points in the following format: 10 for first place, 8 for second, 6 for third, 4 for fourth, and 2 for fifth. All three races will count towards the team series standings, but you must complete at least two races to be eligible for series awards. Additionally, a team must be composed of the same two members at each event for points to accumulate. The first place Male, Female, and Coed Relay Teams in the series point standings at the conclusion of the series will win awards. The First place Tandem team will also win a series award.
Ties: In the event of a tie in series points, the series champion will be determined by the faster time in the West Side Duathlon. If none of the tieing parties participate in the West Side Duathlon, then the faster time in the Big Sky Duathlon will be used to break the tie.
