February 23, 2019 Chilly Cheeks #3 Update

Updated 2/21/19 at 7:30pm:

SaturdayŐs forecast has gone from good to bad, and now itŐs looking better again. There is currently a bit of snow on the course, but the snow that has been predicted for Thursday, Friday, and Saturday morning keeps decreasing in magnitude. As of 7pm, they are saying at most a half inch tonight (Thursday) and less than an inch on Friday night. SaturdayŐs current forecast has sunshine and a high of 41 predicted. That will probably change as we get closer to race day, so watch the weather.

If you have a road bike and a cross or mountain bike, it canŐt hurt to bring them both - but I donŐt anticipate deep snow or anything too crazy. I donŐt make the big bucks for incorrectly predicting the weather, but I can hang with the best of them!

The February Duathlon starts with a 10.8 mile bike ride, and finishes with a 4 mile run (actually 4.13). The first wave atarts at 10:00am sharp, followed by 15-20 additional waves at 1 minute intervals. Waves have been randomly assigned to prevent drafting on the bike course. Your wave will be listed on your race bib number.

The 4 mile run-only is an accurate 4 miles and starts at approximately 10:15am. There will be a single aid station just past the 2 mile mark. Duathletes will follow the same run course as the runners (plus a short stretch from transition to the run loop, thus the 4.13 mile distance).

Rules: A few rules will be enforced on the course.
1. No headphones will be allowed on the run or the bike.
2. Helmets must be worn at all times while on the bike.
3. During the run, when you are on the road sections of the course you must run on the left side of the road facing traffic.
4. No drafting on the bike course - you ride on the right shoulder and leave at least 3 bike lengths between your front tire and the rear tire of the bike ahead of you. Passing must be done on the left and completed within 20 seconds, then you must move back onto the right shoulder. Side-by-side riding is not permitted.

Packet Pickup opens at 8:00am, and the duathlon starts at 10am. The run-only starts at 10:15. Bike racks are first-come, first-served. Feel free to rack your bike before picking up your bib number and timing chip.

If you entered the entire duathlon series and did not attend the first or second race, you may pick up your Chilly Cheeks sweatpants at the registration tables. If you ordered a pair, those will be available for pickup as well.

Directions and Parking: The event will start and finish at the Hobie Hill area, near the West Entrance to the park. From I-25 Take Exit 199 (Belleview) and turn East on Belleview. Drive approximately 1.5 miles to Dayton (there is a stoplight). Turn left on Dayton and drive approximately 0.5 miles. The park entrance will be on your right. Parking will take place at the Hobie Hill parking lot.

Once you are inside the park, signs will direct you to the Hobie Hill lot. Once Hobie Hill has filled, additional parking will be available at the Marina, just 200 yards beyond Hobie Hill.

PLEASE DO NOT drive or park in the grass. You will be ticketed and you will jeopardize our ability to hold the race in the future. Please do not stop on the road or off the road to unload your bike and gear. Doing so will violate a condition of our permit. If you are seen doing either of these things, you will not be permitted to race. Please park in a designated parking space and unload once you are parked.

All vehicles entering the park will be charged a $10 park entrance fee. This is a per-vehicle charge, so car-pooling is encouraged. Vehicles displaying a valid Colorado State Parks annual pass will not be charged.

If there is not an attendant at the gate, please use the credit card kiosk near the entrance station. Park rangers may ticket any vehicle not displaying a paid receipt or annual park pass.
