January, 2019 Chilly Cheeks #2 Update

Updated 1/9/19 at 7pm: I took a drive through the park today, checking out conditions and the park was sunny and dry! The bike course is 100 percent snow-free. There is no ice or moisture of any kind on the bike course.

I did not check out the entire run course, but what I saw was completely dry and based on the weather we have had recently I believe the whole course is currently dry.

Now comes the current forecast. Yesterday they were calling for sunshine and temps in the 50s Friday through Sunday. This afternoon, they added some snow to the forecast for Friday and Friday night. The good news is, there is very little actual accumulation expected, but we will not know for sure until Saturday morning. Weather forecasters don't have the greatest track record for predicting the weather!

I am not going to give my recommendations for bike or shoe choices this time. I would recommend checking out this link to a nearby traffic cam on race morning and also check the Racing Underground Facebook Page for an update that will be posted by me no later than 6am on Saturday morning.

The January race starts with a 1.5 mile run, followed by a 10.8 mile bike ride, then a 2.5 mile run. Run-only participants will pass by the turn into transition at approximately 1.5 miles and will continue onto the second part of the course.

The run will start in 2 waves: Wave-1 is for all run-only participants and all male duathletes. Wave-2 starts 5 minutes later Ð all female duathletes. The run course is a mix of paved road, dirt trail, and paved bike path. When on the road, you must run on the left side of the road facing traffic.

For run-only participants, there will be 2 aid stations. One comes just after the duathletes turn into transition (approx.. 1.5 miles) and the second comes at 3 miles. For duathletes, there will not be any aid on the opening 1.5 mile run. There will be aid on run-2 at approximately 1.5 miles.

Following the first run, duathletes will continue onto the bike. The bike course is a 10.8 mile route. You must ride on the right shoulder of the road, except when you are passing another cyclist. At no point can you cross the yellow line for any reason.

Helmets must be worn at all times while on the bike.

Cyclists will turn into transition at the same point where they exited transition to start the bike. After switching back into running gear, duathletes will exit transition over the same mat that they crossed when finishing the first run.

Rules: A few rules will be enforced on the course. 1. No headphones will be allowed on the run or the bike. 2. Helmets must be worn at all times while on the bike. 3. Run on the left side of the road facing traffic during the first 1.7 miles of the run course. 4. No drafting on the bike course - you ride on the right shoulder and leave at least 3 bike lengths between your front tire and the rear tire of the bike ahead of you. Passing must be done on the left and completed within 20 seconds, then you must move back onto the right shoulder. Side-by-side riding is not permitted.

Directions and Parking: The event will start and finish at the Hobie Hill area, near the West Entrance to the park. From I-25 Take Exit 199 (Belleview) and turn East on Belleview. Drive approximately 1.5 miles to Dayton (there is a stoplight). Turn left on Dayton and drive approximately 0.5 miles. The park entrance will be on your right. Parking will take place at the Hobie Hill parking lot.

Once you are inside the park, signs will direct you to the Hobie Hill lot. Once Hobie Hill has filled, additional parking will be available at the Marina, just 200 yards beyond Hobie Hill.

PLEASE DO NOT drive or park in the grass. You will be ticketed and you will jeopardize our ability to hold the race in the future. Please do not stop on the road or off the road to unload your bike and gear. Doing so will violate a condition of our permit. If you are seen doing either of these things, you will not be permitted to race. Please park in a designated parking space and unload once you are parked.

All vehicles entering the park will be charged a $10 park entrance fee. This is a per-vehicle charge, so car-pooling is encouraged. Vehicles displaying a valid Colorado State Parks annual pass will not be charged. As of January 1st, the Colorado State Parks have increased their entrance fees by $1. We were just notified a few days ago.
